What to Wear: Headshots & Corporate Photos

A question that we get asked often when we are planning a headshot session or corporate photos is “what should I wear?” It’s most important to feel comfortable in what you choose to wear when getting your portrait taken. Keep your wardrobe simple, comfortable and current. And don’t forget to try it on before the photoshoot!

A great question to ask yourself: if you were having a business meeting and meeting that person for the first time, what would you want to be wearing?

When deciding on a color, you should choose what colors and shades suit your hair and complexion best. Some people look best in lighter shades because darker colors give the appearance the clothes are wearing them, instead of the other way around. For others, darker colors look better due to their complexion and can be very slimming and flattering. Ultimately, dress for what color you look and feel best in!

Natasha Miller is an excellent photographer and very professional. She delivers high quality and amazing customer service. It was a pleasure to work with her. I highly recommend Tashography LLC.

If you’re not sure what to wear, feel free to bring 2-3 different top outfits and your photographer can help you decide. You may want to wear a shirt that can be photographed with or without a jacket, to give you a couple of different looks.

If you’re a professional who wears a uniform (doctor, police officer, etc.) and want to be photographed in it, it’s always important to mention that to your photographer ahead of time.

Depending on your industry, the look of a blazer can be too corporate and come off the wrong way. But in other industries, it’s the gold standard. We urge you to consider the industry that you’re in, and the types of clothing that your industry tends to wear.

Some of our reminders:

  • We always suggest avoiding clothing with stripes or fine patterns, such as herringbone or paisley. These tend to not photograph well and cause weird patterns when the images are viewed online.

  • If you normally wear glasses, keep them on for the session and clean your lenses beforehand.

  • You will want to make sure your clothing is ironed, clean, and is “photo session ready,” especially if you are a pet owner. We encourage ironing your garment the night before your appointment. Bring your freshly pressed clothes with you in a garment bag and change at the studio before your session.

Our most important reminder- Have fun & be yourself! Your enthusiasm will shine through in your final image. At the end of the day, it's all about wearing an outfit that looks good on you and makes you feel confident. This will show through in the photos, and you'll be eager to share your new headshot.
