Planning a Surprise Proposal

Throughout life there can be many unexpected surprises, but the truly special surprises can be few and far between, and something we remember forever.

In planning a proposal, you know your significant other best and what they would (or wouldn’t) love. Getting engaged, and capturing photos of this moment, is something truly special that you will both have and remember forever.

There is a lot of planning required to pull off the perfect surprise proposal. Here are some of our top tips to help you prepare for this memorable moment!

Purchase the Perfect Ring

An important first step! They will be wearing this every day, so you want it to be something that is reflective of their style and what they like. Take note of the kind of jewelry they wear, and any photos they may have showed you.

Family and friends can be a great help in choosing exactly the ring your partner will love. If you have a favorite local jewelry store, they can be a great help as well when it comes to narrowing down all the details in selecting a ring.

When and Where

Timing is something you and your significant other will have probably discussed. In picking the perfect day to pop the question, you can consider planning it on the day you met, an anniversary, a birthday, or a meaningful day or time of day for you both.

When it comes to location, you can consider perhaps the location you met, a place that is near and dear to you both, where you first fell in love, at home, somewhere scenic, or somewhere you both have always wanted to go. If you’d like recommendations, please let us know, we’re happy to help with every step of the planning process!

Once we decide on the location, we like to scout the area prior to the proposal day to find the best hiding spot with a good view of your proposal. Then we share a map marked with x’s for where you will be at the set time and where we will be hiding. We arrive early and get into position ready to capture your partner’s reaction to the big question.

We have had the pleasure of capturing some of our favorite surprise proposals at the following locations:

  • Local beaches and parks (Tod’s Point, Southport Beach)

  • Waterfront areas throughout CT and NY (Hastings-on-Hudson, Harbor Island Park)

  • Waveny Park, New Canaan

  • Millbrook Vineyards, Upstate New York

  • Majestic Theater, Stamford, CT

  • J House, Greenwich

Book a Photographer

Hiring a photographer to capture this dreamy moment is the icing on the cake! You will have the photos and memories forever, and it is something you will both cherish together. It is a wonderful surprise for you partner as well!

After-all, it is one of the most special days of your life so what better way to relive the memory than through photos that you can share with family and friends. Together, you and your photographer can narrow down all the details; including date and time, location and more.

Finalize all the Details.

Here are some of the remaining details you will want to consider and plan out as you finalize your surprise.

  • What to wear — this is important both for photos as well as concealing the ring in your pocket!

  • How to discretely get your partner there without ruining the surprise

  • Will you want friends and family there afterwards to celebrate with you both?

  • Champagne, flowers, chocolate, candles and any other things you might like to have there

And lastly, what you will say as you ask them to marry you…one of your most important decisions!
