Fall Family Portraits At Waveny Park In New Canaan, CT
The fall foliage at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT is absolutely breathtaking. I've been looking forward to the peak foliage since the season started in September. This year in Fairfield County, we can expect to experience peak foliage during the end of October and early November, which will a busy time for myself as well as the other local photographers. I usually meet my clients for a natural light outdoor session an hour before sunset (golden hour) for best lighting and stunning photos. The way the sunlight shines through the colors of the changing leaves is just phenomenal.
During the fall at Waveny Park, the beautiful Japanese maple trees glow red as the leaves are backlit during golden hour and the whole park looks magical, bursting in color.
It's my goal to get a good mix of candid and posed portraits for my clients using the natural light and scenery that Waveny provides. I start by the old mansion, Waveny House, which leads to these beautiful pathways and large fields surrounded by stately trees. I also like to take my clients into the walled oriental garden for some portraits on the wooden bench which has a gorgeous backdrop of fall foliage.
For many of these sessions, I'm shooting with my Nikon D800e and the 70-200mm f/2.8 or the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for a wider angle. I usually end the shoot by the long grass in the back which glows yellow and orange during sunset. As we head back to the parking lot, I capture some silhouettes against the sunset if it's late enough. I've had lots of fun shooting at Waveny Park over the years and am grateful to live so close to a park of its grandeur.
